NCAT Research Ethics










The goal of this course is to welcome you into the chemistry research community at North Carolina A&T State University. The readings are designed to support and empower you, helping you to feel comfortable in your endeavors as a scholar. Online exercises will introduce the rewards of and obstacles to research; the causes and consequences of misconduct; the rights and obligations of professionals; the habits of excellent mentors; and the social responsibilities of researchers.

We will follow a three-step method for making moral decisions: my interests; our interests; all interests. The method will help you organize your thoughts as you move through the topics. It will also be useful long after you finish the course because novel ethical dilemmas may arise in your career. When facing difficult choices we need two skills: critical analysis and moral imagination. Our method helps you improve both skills.

You will also meet chemistry "heels" and "heros;" work through interactive exercises surveying policies, rules, and regulations; and join a discipline-specific seminar on the social responsibilities of chemistry researchers. Finally, you will identify sources of continuing education.

When taught by an ethicist in a face-to-face instructional setting, this seminar satisfies the responsible conduct of research training requirements of the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the America COMPETES Act.
