8.0 ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS

Ethics is the study of arguments about good and bad states of affairs, and right and wrong conduct. What are the ethical implications of the fact that humans, animals, and machines are categories encompassing a wide range of beings and things?

Is it a good or bad thing that the boundaries between humans and machines are being blurred? Given what we know about the mental capacities of the Great Apes, is it right or wrong to keep them in captivity and use them in experiments?

Does Darwinism lead to ethical naturalism, the view that normative terms name intrinsic values and categorical obligations name objective properties of acts? Or does it lead to Nihilism, the view that explains away ethics by showing that our moral values evolved over long historical epochs, were strongly selected for, and are therefore neither objective, intrinsic or categorical.
