There will be dangers. Even robust communities can quickly fall apart.

In early October, Chantal Ly (front row, far right) told Goodwin that Ly was concerned about Ly's lack of progress on her project. Goodwin asked Ly to think about working on a new project, and gave her 3 pages of an NIH grant application to read. The document described work on what Goodwin called the Star-2 project. Ly knew that it was not Goodwin's practice to ask lab members to review her grant applications. She also knew that Garett Padilla (back row in red), was working on Star-2. So she showed the pages to Padilla.

His response took Ly's breath away.

“The western blot figure labeled as star-2 describes previously published research,” said Padilla.

“The figure claims to show a new picture of the star-2 protein. But this is not a new picture. Nor is it a picture of star-2. It an old picture of tra-2, a picture Betsy took two years ago of an entirely different protein. This picture appears in one of Betsy's earlier publications. Chantal, it is mislabelled. Fabricated.”
